McBride Contemporain is pleased to present an artist talk featuring Jim Holyoak and Bernard Lamarche in celebration of the launch of Holyoak’s long-awaited artist book, the Book of 19 Nocturnes, 25 years in the making.
In a series of 19 nocturnal works gathered in a single book, Holyoak questions the boundaries between darkness and light, reality and dream, while exploring the nuances of the imaginary and the subconscious. This discussion with the artist will focus on dreams and insomnia, the surrealist aspect of the work, and the many sources of inspiration – Breton, Whistler, Chopin, Baudelaire – that may have marked this work between the installation and graphic novel genres.
